You press the brake pedal, and it sinks to the floor without slowing the car. What should you do first?
A neutral pedal-location reference shows an automatic car’s brake and accelerator, without a foot or selected action. The card describes the brake pedal sinking to the floor without slowing the car; the reference is not a depiction of the failed pedal’s travel.
Correct answer: Pump the brake pedal fast to try to build up pressure.
Why
If pumping does not work, shift to a lower gear so that the engine helps to slow the car. Then use the parking brake, and release it for a moment if the car starts to skid. Steer toward an open area; if a crash cannot be avoided, a sideswipe is better than a head-on hit into something solid.
