You drive a six-year-old child who is 48 inches tall and weighs 50 pounds. Your car has a back seat, and no other children ride with you. How must the child ride?
Correct answer: In a rear seat, in an approved child restraint such as a booster seat.
Why
An adult belt does not fit a small child: the lap belt rides up on the stomach, and the shoulder belt crosses the neck. The manual's five-step fit test helps you decide when a child can leave the booster: back against the seat, knees bent at the seat edge, shoulder belt across the collarbone and chest, lap belt on the upper thighs, and able to sit that way for the whole trip. Many children need a booster seat until they are 8 to 12 years old.
