Regulatory, Lane & Parking SignsStandalone practice
You pass a white rectangular sign that reads SPEED LIMIT 35. The road is dry and the day is clear, but most cars around you move at about 45 mph. What speed may you drive?

Correct answer: No faster than 35 mph, even though other traffic moves faster
Why
Rhode Island's Basic Speed Law also requires you to drive only as fast as the conditions allow, so rain, snow or heavy traffic can make even 35 mph too fast. Where no other limit is posted, state law sets 25 mph in business and residence districts. A lower speed gives you more time to see a hazard and stop.
