Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You approach a railroad crossing. The red lights at the crossing start to flash, but the gate is still up. You stop with your front bumper about 10 feet from the nearest rail. Is this a legal place to stop?
A has stopped with its front bumper 10 feet before the nearest railroad rail. A short bracket identifies the bumper-to-rail gap. A red warning lamp is lit on the crossbuck mast, and the striped gate remains fully upright.
Correct answer: No, because the law requires a stop between 15 and 50 feet from the rail.
Why
A train is wider than the track, and it can need about a mile and a half to stop, so it cannot stop for you. After you stop, look and listen, and cross only when the signals stop and no train comes. Never try to beat a train to the crossing, and never think that tracks with little use are empty.
