You drive your 5-year-old nephew. He is 44 inches tall and has outgrown the height limit of his forward-facing harness seat. How must he ride under South Carolina law?
Correct answer: In a belt-positioning booster seat in a rear seat, with the lap and shoulder belt
Why
South Carolina uses four stages: a rear-facing seat under age 2, a forward-facing seat with a harness, a booster seat, and then the adult belt. A child moves to the next stage only after outgrowing the height or weight limit of the current seat. The adult belt fits when the lap belt lies across the thighs and hips, the shoulder belt crosses the middle of the chest, and the child can sit back with knees bent at the seat edge. Never put a rear-facing child seat in front of an air bag.
