You drive with your 9-year-old nephew and a baby in a rear-facing car seat. The front passenger air bag is turned on. Where should the children ride?
An empty cutaway blue cabin shows front and rear seating areas. No child, baby seat, seat-placement highlight or rearward arrow is present. The card gives both children’s ages and active front air bag.
Correct answer: Both in the back; never put a rear-facing seat in front of an active air bag.
Why
An air bag opens with great force and can seriously injure a small child. In general, a child is safer in the back than in the front, and safer in the middle than next to a door. Install the child seat as its directions say, and never hold a child on your lap.
