Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You drive in the right lane of a four-lane interstate. Ahead, a tow truck with flashing amber lights is stopped on the right shoulder. Unless an officer directs you otherwise, what must you do?
A is in the right lane of an interstate approaching a tow truck stopped on the right shoulder with its amber flashers on. A long-road overview and enlarged truck detail show the same situation; no distance is selected in the question.
Correct answer: Move to the left lane at least 300 feet before the tow truck, then pass with care
Why
The move-over law protects tow operators, road crews, and emergency responders who work next to moving traffic. It applies to any stopped vehicle, or vehicle on the shoulder, that uses amber, yellow, or blue warning lights. On a two-lane highway, the rule is different: slow to at least 20 mph below the posted limit, starting at least 300 feet before the vehicle.
