Passing target: 80% (24/30)
You drive on a two-lane highway posted at 65 mph. Ahead, a highway department truck is stopped on the shoulder with its amber lights flashing. What does South Dakota law require of you?
Blue A approaches a white highway maintenance truck B stopped entirely on the right shoulder of a two-lane highway. B’s amber beacon is lit, with a larger detail of the same truck. The card gives the posted 65 mph limit but no chosen speed or slowdown distance.
Correct answer: Slow to 45 mph or less at least 300 feet before the truck, then pass with caution.
Why
Roadside workers such as tow operators, road crews and officers stand very close to moving traffic. On a road with two or more lanes in your direction, the law tells you to move to the lane farthest from the vehicle; on a two-lane road, you must slow down instead. Where the posted limit is 20 mph or less, slow to 5 mph.
