A 19-year-old driver drinks one beer with dinner. On the way home, an officer stops her, and a breath test shows an alcohol concentration of 0.03. What is true under Texas law?
Correct answer: She committed an offense, since a driver under 21 may not have any detectable alcohol.
Why
Zero tolerance means that a young driver does not have to be intoxicated to break the law. A breath or blood test that shows any alcohol also leads to a license suspension (or the denial of a license if the minor has none), apart from the criminal case. Even small amounts of alcohol weaken judgment and reactions, and new drivers have less experience to make up for it, so the safe rule is no alcohol at all before you drive.
