Safe & Responsible DrivingStandalone practice
At a red light on an empty city street, the driver beside you says, "Let's see who reaches 40 mph first." The posted limit is 40 mph, so neither of you would speed. What does Texas law say about this?
Correct answer: It is illegal, because a contest of acceleration on a public road is a drag race
Why
Texas law bans taking part in any race, speed competition, drag race or acceleration contest on a public road. A start side by side from a stop to outdistance each other is a drag race by definition, so the speed limit does not matter. Racers cannot react in time to a car or person that enters the road, and the offense becomes a felony when someone is hurt.
