You drive with two adult friends. One sits in the front seat, and one sits in the back seat, where a safety belt is available. Who must wear a safety belt?
Correct answer: You and both friends, because the rule covers adults in every seat that has a belt.
Why
Safety belts hold you in the position that the vehicle maker designed, so you keep better control and are much less likely to be thrown from the vehicle in a crash. The lap part belongs low and snug on your hips, not on your stomach, and the shoulder part crosses your chest. A shoulder strap tucked under the arm or behind you gives no protection where the body is strongest. Under Vermont law, the driver commits the violation when an adult passenger is not belted.
