Passing target: 85% (34/40)
An ambulance with its siren on and its lights flashing passes you on its way to an emergency call. After it passes, you drive on and are about 300 feet behind it in the same lane. What must you do?
In the lower scaled road view, A follows ambulance B in the same lane at the stated approximate 300-foot gap. The upper separate-scale detail identifies A and B, and B’s siren and flashing lights. No minimum-gap bracket is shown.
Correct answer: Drop back until you are at least 500 feet behind the ambulance
Why
Emergency vehicles on a call can stop, turn or change lanes with little warning, and crews can get out at the scene. A gap of 500 feet gives you time to react and keeps the path clear for other emergency vehicles. You also must not park within 500 feet of the place where fire trucks have stopped for an alarm.
