In heavy rain on a highway, your car goes through standing water. The steering suddenly feels light, and the tires seem to ride on top of the water. What should you do first?
Blue A travels on a wet highway through patches of standing water. An enlarged tire detail shows water between the tire and pavement; it is a separate scale. No recovery path is drawn.
Correct answer: Take your foot off the gas and hold the steering wheel steady
Why
Hydroplaning occurs when a layer of water lifts the tires off the road, most often at higher speeds in ponded water. Until the tires touch the road again, the car cannot respond well to braking or steering. The best prevention is to slow down in heavy rain and to avoid standing water when you can. After the tires grip again, brake gently if you must slow down more.
