Ava turned 15 last month. She has enrolled in an approved driver training course that starts on June 20. When can she apply for her Washington instruction permit?
Correct answer: From June 10 to June 19, while she is still 15
Why
Washington has two permit paths. A student in an approved driver training course can get a permit at 15, and DOL can waive the knowledge exam for that permit; a student who is not enrolled must be 15½ and pass the knowledge exam first. With the permit, the student can practice between lessons with a qualified supervisor. Have your WDL number ready, because the school uses it for its records.
