For an ordinary passenger car in normal road and weather conditions, what minimum following time does Alberta’s guide recommend?
Blue A follows silver B on a clear two-way road. A fixed roadside post is beside the road. In this starting frame, the rear of B is level with that post. The picture does not yet state a time interval.
Correct answer: Two seconds
Why
For an ordinary passenger car, keep at least two seconds behind the vehicle ahead in normal road and weather conditions. Start counting when the leading vehicle passes a fixed point; your front should reach it no earlier than two seconds later. Increase the interval in poorer conditions. This is handbook guidance; the regulation requires a reasonable and prudent following distance for the circumstances.
