In favorable conditions, how can a driver check a basic following cushion?
Blue car A follows silver car B in good conditions. A fixed roadside post is level with B’s rear in this starting frame.
Correct answer: Stay three or more seconds behind, timed at a fixed point.
Why
Use a fixed roadside point to measure a time gap. Arizona’s manual describes a 3-to-6-second cushion and gives a four-second counting example. At least three seconds is only a favorable-condition starting point; allow more time when conditions need it. The law requires a reasonable and prudent gap, not a universal three-second minimum.
