In normal clear traffic, when should you begin slowing specifically for a freeway exit with a deceleration lane?
Blue A and silver B occupy the through lane above an exit-lane taper. The exit lane is empty.
Correct answer: After you have entered the exit lane
Why
Plan the exit early, move into the appropriate lane safely and signal. In ordinary clear conditions, maintain your speed until you enter the exit lane, then slow gradually for the ramp and the road beyond. Always respond earlier if traffic, visibility or another hazard requires it; the normal sequence is not an instruction to maintain an unsafe speed. In the answer picture, car A is fully inside the exit lane, where it can slow down.
