The hood flies up and blocks your usual forward view. The car remains controllable and a safe place to pull over is available. What should you do?
A blue car with its hood raised is in its travel lane beside a clear paved shoulder. An inset enlarges the same car and its blocked forward view.
Correct answer: Look under or beside the hood, ease off, warn others, pull over
Why
Try to see through the gap below the hood or open the window and look in the direction of travel. Take your foot off the accelerator, switch on the hazard lights and use brake-light warnings as you slow, following ICBC’s hood-emergency strategy. Steer toward the safe side of the road and stop clear of traffic. Keep control throughout.
