Passing target: 80% (24/30)
A car is stopped on the right shoulder with hazard lights flashing. Your highway has two lanes in your direction, and the left lane is safely available. What must you do?
Blue car A approaches in the right lane of a highway with two lanes traveling to the right. Silver car B is stopped completely on the right shoulder with hazard lights flashing. The left lane is clear.
Correct answer: Move into the left lane and pass with care.
Why
Move at least one moving lane away from the stationary vehicle when that lane is safely available. If you cannot move over, reduce to a speed safe for the conditions. The statute presumes 25 mph or less when the limit is below 45 mph, or 20 mph below the limit when it is 45 mph or more, unless even that is unsafe. The rule also protects people installing chains beside the road with warning lights displayed.
