After passing on a two-lane road, when may a driver return to the right lane?
Blue car A is ahead of silver car B after passing on a two-way road. A is temporarily left of the broken yellow centerline; B is in the right-hand lane.
Correct answer: When safely clear, before oncoming traffic is within 200 feet.
Why
A driver passing left must keep a safe clearance, return only when safely clear, and avoid coming within 200 feet of an approaching vehicle. Do not begin a left-side pass at a blind crest or curve, within 100 feet of a railroad crossing, or within 100 feet of a bridge, viaduct or tunnel when the view is obstructed. The intersection 100-foot restriction has a specific exception for unmarked state/county-road intersections outside city limits. One-way roads, necessary obstruction avoidance and private-access left turns have separate statutory provisions; none permits an unsafe ordinary pass.
