Passing target: 15 correct signs and 15 correct rules
If a safe lane change is not possible while passing a bicyclist, what should a Georgia driver do?
Blue car A and cyclist B travel in the same direction on one wide lane. The image has no distance bracket or speed measurement.
Correct answer: Slow down as required and keep at least 3 feet away.
Why
First change into a lane not adjacent to the bicycle when road and traffic conditions safely allow. If that is impossible, prohibited or unsafe, reduce to a reasonable speed for conditions and keep at least 3 feet of clearance throughout the pass. Georgia specifies a speed at least 10 mph below the posted limit or 25 mph, whichever is more. For example, on a road posted 45 mph, pass at no more than 35 mph, and slower when conditions require. If the required clearance is unavailable, wait.
