Traffic Signals & Road MarkingsStandalone practice
All lights in an ordinary intersection traffic signal have failed. No officer directs traffic. How must drivers treat the intersection?
An empty intersection has dark ordinary three-lamp signal heads and painted stop lines on all approaches. No road user demonstrates a response to the failed lights.
Correct answer: As an all-way stop.
Why
When an ordinary traffic signal is not functioning at all, treat the intersection as if stop signs face all directions. Stop, yield to pedestrians, and use all-way-stop priority. A normally dark pedestrian hybrid beacon is a different device and is not an equipment-failure signal.
