Vehicle Safety, Documents & TowingStandalone practice
For an ordinary vehicle-to-vehicle tow, excluding the special exception for long structural loads, what is the maximum connection length?
Correct answer: 15 feet, with safety chains or cables.
Why
The drawbar or connection must be strong enough for the load and no longer than 15 feet for the stated ordinary tow. Outside a business, residential, or suburban district, or on a controlled-access highway, the applicable ordinary towed vehicle requires a drawbar and two sufficiently strong safety chains or cables. Special vehicle and long-load exceptions exist; this is not permission to improvise an unsafe tow.
