Passing target: 7 correct signs and 18 correct rules
You approach a stationary emergency vehicle displaying emergency lights on a highway with two lanes in each direction. You can safely move away from the adjacent lane. What must you do?
Blue car A approaches a black-and-white police SUV B stopped on the paved right shoulder with red and blue warning lights flashing. Two same-direction travel lanes are visible; the left lane is clear.
Correct answer: Change to a lane away from the vehicle and proceed with due caution.
Why
On a highway with at least four total lanes and at least two in your direction, change away from the adjacent lane if safe. If the change is impossible or unsafe, reduce to at least 10 mph below the posted limit and travel at a safe speed for conditions. The law also covers the specified stationary service or maintenance vehicles displaying amber lights and a stationary disabled vehicle with hazard warning signals. It does not override a school bus's extended stop arm.
