You have parked beside traffic and want to open the driver-side door. What must you do?
A blue car is parked facing east beside the right curb, with all doors closed. A helmeted cyclist approaches from behind on the left side of the parked car.
Correct answer: Open it only when safe for traffic, and close it quickly.
Why
Do not open a door on the traffic side unless it can be done with reasonable safety and without interfering with moving traffic. Check for bicycles, motorcycles and other vehicles. Keep the door open only as long as necessary to load or unload passengers; a safe initial check is not permission to obstruct later traffic.
