Parking, Reversing & Roadside StopsStandalone practice
You are parking and leaving a vehicle unattended using its ordinary shutdown procedure, not a lawful remote-start system. What must you do?
Correct answer: Stop the engine, remove the key, and set the brake.
Why
Stop the engine, lock the ignition, remove the key and effectively set the brake. On a grade, secure the front wheels toward the curb or roadside as applicable to the slope, and use the vehicle’s proper parking procedure. Kansas has a specific remote-start exception for a locked vehicle with keys outside it; that is not permission to leave an ordinary unsecured vehicle running.
