Turns, Lanes, Passing & MergingStandalone practice
On a one-lane-per-direction road, what minimum clearance should you keep while passing a bicyclist when space is available?
Correct answer: At least three feet
Why
On a road with one lane in each direction, pass to the left with at least three feet between every part of the vehicle and the bicycle, maintaining it until safely past. The statute includes reasonable caution when roadway space does not permit that clearance; waiting for a safer opportunity can be necessary. On a multi-lane road, use the safely available immediate-left lane. A qualified no-passing-zone exception does not remove other prohibitions or the need to avoid oncoming traffic.
