Parking, Reversing & Roadside StopsStandalone practice
Before leaving a parked vehicle, what should the driver do?
Correct answer: Set the parking brake and put the car in park or in gear.
Why
Use the parking brake and the transmission position specified for the vehicle. For an ordinary unattended vehicle, Maryland also requires stopping the engine, locking the ignition and removing the key. On a grade, the wheels must be positioned toward the curb or side for containment. Narrow law-enforcement/animal-control and limited remote-start/private-property exceptions do not remove the need to prevent rolling.
