Passing target: 72% (18/25)
On a one-way roadway with two clear travel lanes, the vehicle ahead is in the left lane. When may you overtake it using the right travel lane?
Blue car A is in the right travel lane of a one-way roadway. Silver car B is farther ahead in the left travel lane. No completed pass is shown.
Correct answer: When the road is clear, wide enough, and the pass is safe.
Why
Massachusetts permits passing on the right when the roadway is unobstructed and wide enough for two or more lines of moving vehicles and a listed circumstance applies, including a one-way street or roadway restricted to one direction. Another listed circumstance is a vehicle making or about to make a left turn. The handbook prohibits using a shoulder, breakdown lane or sidewalk to pass. This question uses two clear ordinary travel lanes; check traffic and pass only when safe.
