Passing target: 8 correct signs and 24 correct rules (TLA practice targets)
When a pass on the right is otherwise lawful, may you leave the pavement or use the shoulder to complete it?
An empty roadway has two lanes separated by broken white paint, with a solid white outer edge and roadside verge. No vehicle selects a passing lane or the shoulder.
Correct answer: No; do not use the shoulder or leave the roadway.
Why
A right-side pass is permitted only in specified roadway situations and only when safe, such as passing a vehicle turning left or using sufficient lawful lanes in the same direction. It must not be made by driving off the pavement or main-traveled portion of the roadway. A wide paved shoulder is not a general passing lane.
