One lane of a two-lane highway is closed for road work. You are first in line, and the flagger holds the STOP side of the paddle toward you. After a short wait, the last car from the other direction goes past you, and the open lane ahead looks empty. What should you do?
A is first in line at a one-lane work zone. The flagger holds an exact U.S. STOP paddle toward A, and the open lane beyond is empty.
Correct answer: Stay stopped until the flagger turns the paddle to SLOW or signals you to go.
Why
At a lane closure, traffic from both directions takes turns in one open lane, and the flaggers at each end control the turns. From your place in line, you cannot see the workers, equipment or cars that are still in the lane. Minnesota law lets a work-zone flagger stop vehicles, hold them in place and send them on when it is safe, and a violation of this rule in a work zone brings a $300 fine. When the flagger lets you go, drive slowly and watch for workers.
