You check a front tire with a tread depth gauge. In the groove nearest the center of the tire, it reads 1/32 inch at three places around the tire. What is true about this tire?
Correct answer: It is unsafe and illegal, because tread in Minnesota must be at least 1/16 inch deep.
Why
Deep tread lets water escape from under the tire and helps prevent hydroplaning and skids. With no gauge, you can use the penny test: put Lincoln's head down into the shallowest groove, and if the tread covers part of his head, the tire has enough tread. Also check your tires often for cuts, bulges and uneven wear, and keep them at the pressure that the sticker inside the driver's door shows.
