It is raining hard, and the highway is slippery. You drive a standard car. How much following time should you keep behind the vehicle ahead?
Correct answer: A four- or five-second count
Why
On a wet road, your tires have less grip, so you need more distance to stop. Rain also makes it harder to see brake lights and hazards ahead. In heavy rain or fog, slow down and increase your following distance; if the road ahead is not visible for a safe distance, leave the road and stop until you can see better.
