Vehicle Safety, Documents & TowingStandalone practice
You have a Class D license. Your pickup has a gross vehicle weight of 9,000 pounds. You want to tow a loaded equipment trailer with a gross vehicle weight of 12,000 pounds for your own use. What does your Class D license allow?
Correct answer: You may tow it, because the pickup and the trailer together weigh 26,000 pounds or less.
Why
A Class D license lets you tow a trailer of 10,000 pounds or less, or a heavier trailer when the combined gross vehicle weight of both vehicles is 26,000 pounds or less. Above those limits, you need a higher license class. Towing also changes how your vehicle handles, so allow more room to stop and turn and attach the safety chain. A trailer of 3,000 pounds or more must have its own brakes.
