Snow and ice cover the road. About how much following time does the Missouri Driver Guide tell you to keep behind the vehicle ahead?
A follows B on a road shown with ice and snow. A fixed roadside marker provides a point for counting the gap.
Correct answer: About eight to ten seconds, far longer than the usual gap
Why
On snow or ice your tires have far less grip, so you need much more distance to stop. Slow down, brake gently and smoothly, and do not use cruise control. Bridges and overpasses freeze before the rest of the road, so keep the larger gap there even when other parts of the road look clear.
