On an icy curve, the rear of your car starts sliding to the right. What should you do?
A approaches an icy right curve. A white motion arrow beside its rear shows the rear sliding to the driver’s right.
Correct answer: Ease off the gas and gently steer right, the way the rear wheels are sliding.
Why
This recovery works the same in front-wheel and rear-wheel drive cars. As the rear of the car comes back in line, straighten the front wheels so the car points down your lane again. On ice and snow, lower speed and gentle steering and braking help keep a skid from starting at all.
