You are driving 50 mph in heavy rain when the steering suddenly feels light and the tires seem to float on the water. What should you do?
Correct answer: Take your foot off the gas and let the car slow down without braking.
Why
Hydroplaning happens when a layer of water lifts the tires off the pavement, so steering and braking stop working normally. The guide says it can start at any speed over 35 mph, and in a severe storm the tires can fully lose touch with the pavement at 55 mph. Good tread, correct tire pressure, and lower speed on wet roads help prevent it.
