Vehicle Safety, Documents & TowingStandalone practice
You use a towline to tow a friend's disabled car to a repair shop. What is the greatest distance between the two vehicles that Missouri law allows?
The leading car B tows A using a connecting line. Both cars face right and are aligned in one lane.
Correct answer: No more than 15 feet apart
Why
A short connection helps the towed car follow the towing car's path and slow down with it. Whenever headlights are required, including from a half hour after sunset to a half hour before sunrise, both vehicles must show their lights. Missouri law also generally requires a safety chain or cable in addition to the main hitch, so the towed car stays attached if the main coupling fails.
