Parking, Reversing & Roadside StopsStandalone practice
You are driving on a two-lane highway and realize that you just passed the side road you wanted. What should you do?
Correct answer: Drive on to a safe place where you can turn around, then come back
Why
Backing is hard to control and other drivers do not expect it, so Montana law allows it only when it is reasonably safe and does not interfere with traffic. The manual goes further: a missed turn is never a reason to stop or back up in a travel lane. Drive on and turn around where you can see 500 feet in both directions with no vehicles coming, and remember that many cities ban U-turns in the middle of a block.
