Traffic in your lane has stopped. The marked bike lane beside you is empty all the way to the next corner, but you plan to go straight for several more blocks. May you drive in the bike lane to get past the stopped cars?
A waits behind stopped cars while an empty marked bike lane runs beside the right curb. A intends to continue straight.
Correct answer: No; you may enter a bike lane only to cross it to turn, park, or use a driveway.
Why
A marked bike lane is set aside for bicyclists, and it is illegal to drive a motor vehicle in it. You may cross it to move into another travel lane, to enter or leave a parking space, or to reach private property, but first make sure it is safe and yield to any approaching bicyclist. Before a right turn, move into the bike lane only when it is clear and shortly before the corner.
