Passing target: 80% (32/40)
At night on a dark two-lane road, you have your high beams on. You come up behind a slower car going your way and follow it about 100 feet back while you wait for a place to pass. No car comes toward you. What should you do with your headlights?
At night, A follows car B on a two-lane road with no oncoming vehicle. A’s high-beam light reaches toward B; the card states a following gap of about 100 feet.
Correct answer: Switch to low beams, and keep them on while you follow the car.
Why
High beams light the road far ahead, but from behind they shine into the mirrors of the car in front and can dazzle its driver. The manual says to use high beams only when no vehicle comes toward you, to dim them for all approaching traffic, and to use low beams when you follow another vehicle. New Hampshire law requires dimming at the latest when you come within about 150 feet of another vehicle at night, whether it comes toward you or goes your way.
