In heavy rain, you drive at highway speed over a stretch where water has pooled on the pavement. The steering suddenly feels light as the front tires lose contact with the road. What should you do first?
A drives through pooled water in heavy rain. Its front tires have lost grip, and the card states that the steering feels light.
Correct answer: Ease off the gas and hold the wheel steady until the tires grip the road again
Why
Hydroplaning happens when the front tires ride up on a layer of water, much like water skis, so steering and braking have little effect. The manual's skid advice starts with easing up on the accelerator, and sudden stops can cause a skid. The best defense is prevention: slow down on wet roads and near pools of water, and keep tires with good tread at the correct pressure.
