Passing target: 80% (32/40)
A police car with flashing blue lights follows you, and you pull over and stop on the shoulder. What should you do while the officer walks up to your car?
Blue car A is stopped on the right shoulder with police SUV B behind it. B’s blue warning lamp is lit, and a card states that the officer is approaching; the view is framed on the stopped vehicles.
Correct answer: Stay in the car with the engine off, belt on, and hands on the steering wheel
Why
A traffic stop can be tense for both the driver and the officer, so calm, visible and predictable actions make it safer. The manual also says to turn on the hazard flashers, and at night the interior lights, and to ask passengers to stay calm and buckled. If the police vehicle is unmarked, make sure that its blue lights are on, and you may ask an officer in plain clothes for identification.
