On an icy curve, the rear of your car starts to slide to the right. What should you do?
A is on an icy right-hand curve. A white arrow at the rear points toward the driver’s right, identifying the direction of the rear-end skid without showing a steering correction.
Correct answer: Ease off the gas and steer to the right, the way the rear is sliding
Why
A skid can start when you drive too fast for conditions, stop too suddenly, or the tires lose their grip on the road. Steering in the same direction that the rear is sliding lets the car line up and move straight again. Make small corrections, be ready to steer the other way if the car swings back, and when the skid stops, straighten the front wheels and steer back into your path.
