Passing target: 80% (32/40)
Your right front tire blows out at 55 mph on a two-lane highway. You grip the wheel firmly, hold the car straight and ease off the gas. The car is now slowing and under control, and it is still in your lane. What should you do next?
A blue car with a deflated right-front tire faces right in its lane on a two-lane highway. It is slowing and under control. A clear paved shoulder is visible on its right.
Correct answer: Let it keep slowing, brake gently if needed, and pull off with the flashers on
Why
A front-tire blowout pulls the car toward the side of the flat tire, and a rear-tire blowout makes the car wobble and pull. The first steps are the same for both: grip the wheel firmly, keep straight and ease off the accelerator. Hard braking or a sharp turn at speed can spin the car, so use the brakes gently and only when the car is slow and straight.
