Passing target: 80% (32/40)
Your right wheels drift off the pavement onto a gravel shoulder that is a few inches lower than the road. What should you do?
A straddles the pavement edge with its right wheels on lower gravel. A side-view detail shows the small drop between pavement and shoulder.
Correct answer: Ease off the gas, slow down gradually, and steer back onto the pavement when it is safe.
Why
At speed, a sharp turn can let the tire catch on the pavement edge and then throw the car across the road into oncoming traffic. Slowing first lets the tire climb the edge with a small steering input. Stay on the shoulder until your speed is low and the road is clear.
