You are driving through an intersection on a green light when an ambulance comes up behind you with its siren sounding and red lights flashing. What should you do?
A is driving through an intersection on green. An ambulance approaches from behind with its red lights flashing and siren sounding, as stated in the card.
Correct answer: Clear the intersection, then pull over close to the right edge and stop until the ambulance passes.
Why
When an emergency vehicle comes toward you with its siren sounding, New Jersey law requires you to drive as close as possible to the right edge of the road, clear of any intersection, and stop until it has passed. The manual gives the same duty for flashing red or blue emergency lights. Afterward, do not follow an emergency vehicle on a call closer than 300 feet, and do not park within 200 feet of a fire truck that has stopped for a fire alarm. Never drive over a fire hose unless an official directs you to.
