At his permit vision screening, Sam can read the chart at the 20/50 level only while he wears his glasses. What is the result?
Correct answer: He passes, since glasses are allowed; he must wear them to drive.
Why
New Jersey screens the vision of every permit applicant because most of the information a driver needs is visual. An applicant with sight in only one eye must meet 20/50 in that eye and bring documentation signed by a licensed physician. The stricter 20/40, both-eyes rule applies only to commercial (CDL) applicants.
