You find a curb space in the middle of a block, with no signs, driveways or crosswalks nearby. Your car would be 12 feet from a fire hydrant. Does New Jersey's hydrant rule allow you to park there?
A is shown in a proposed curb space with its front 12 feet before a fire hydrant. The street has no nearby sign, driveway or crosswalk; no legal conclusion appears in the question image.
Correct answer: Yes, because you would be more than 10 feet from the hydrant.
Why
New Jersey law forbids stopping or parking within 10 feet of a fire hydrant unless an officer, sign or signal directs you, or you must stop to avoid a crash. Firefighters need that space to reach the hydrant and connect hoses quickly. The same law lists other distances, such as 25 feet from a crosswalk at an intersection and 50 feet from a stop sign. Staying in the car does not make a no-parking space legal.
