It is raining steadily and the road is wet. You use the three-seconds-plus count behind the car ahead. What is the smallest gap that the New Jersey manual recommends now?
A follows B on a wet two-lane road in steady rain. The space between the two cars has no value printed in the question image.
Correct answer: At least 4 seconds, and more when conditions are worse.
Why
The three-second gap is meant for good conditions. On wet roads, tires have less grip and you need more distance to stop, so the New Jersey manual raises the gap to four seconds or more. On snow-covered roads it recommends six seconds or more. Drive more slowly on wet roads too, and avoid quick turns or speed changes that can start a skid.
